Layered DBMS Architecture

چکیده

More than two decades ago, DB researchers faced up to the question of how to design a data-independent database management system (DBMS), that is, a DBMS which offers an appropriate application programming interface (API) to the user and whose architecture is open for permanent evolution. For this purpose, an architectural model based on successive data abstraction steps of record-oriented data was proposed as kind of a standard and later refined to a five-layer hierarchical DBMS model. We review the basic concepts and implementation techniques of this model and survey the major improvements achieved in the system layers to date. Furthermore, we consider the interplay of the layered model with the transactional ACID properties and again outline the progress obtained. In the course of the last 20 years, this DBMS architecture was challenged by a variety of new requirements and changes as far as processing environments, data types, functional extensions, heterogeneity, autonomy, scalability, etc. are concerned. We identify the cases which can be adjusted by our standard system model without the need of major extensions or other types of system models.1

Aert: An Architbcture for Transforming a Passive DBMS into an Active DBMS

Alert is an extension architecture designed for transforming a passive SQL DBMS into. an active DBMS. The salient features of the design of Alert are reusing, to the extent possible, the passive DBMS technology, and making minimal changes to the language and implementation of the passive DBMS. Alert provides a layered architecture that allows the semantics of a variety of production rule langua...

Deep Boltzmann Machines with Fine Scalability

We present a layered Boltzmann machine (BM) that can better exploit the advantages of a distributed representation. It is widely believed that deep BMs (DBMs) have far greater representational power than its shallow counterpart, restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs). However, this expectation on the supremacy of DBMs over RBMs has not ever been validated in a theoretical fashion. In this paper, ...

Cellular DBMS: An Attempt Towards Biologically-Inspired Data Management

Existing database management systems (DBMS) are complex and less predictable (i.e., the consistency of performance with the increase of functionality and the data growth is not certain). Database researchers acknowledge the need for revisiting DBMS architectures to fulfill the needs of new hardware and application trends. We propose a biologically inspired DBMS architecture called ”Cellular DBM...

RAM: Array Processing over a Relational DBMS

Developing multimedia applications in relational databases is hindered by a mismatch in computational frameworks. Efficient manipulation of multimedia data calls for array-based processing, which at best is available as a database add-on, not supported by the query optimizer. As a result, array-based processing ends up in dedicated programs outside the DBMS: non-reusable black boxes. The goal o...
